Mos Def uses
several techniques to express different things in his song, “Love.” I first
noticed his use of internal rhymes, end stopped lines, and enjambments. He uses
these techniques to create the “beat” of the song. Next, I noticed that he uses
personification to give love human characteristics. Also, he uses apostrophes
to address love. An oxymoron stood out to me as a significant part of the song.
Lastly, many anaphoras are present in this song.
The
effect of the three techniques mentioned is the rhythm or beat in the song.
Most songs have a rhythmic unit. He creates this particular rhythmic unit with
those techniques. Interestingly, he personifies love and addresses love as if
it is a person (apostrophe). I think that he does this to show what an
emotional impact being in love can have on one’s life. The final technique with
an effect I found was the use of an oxymoron to describe that love is so
powerful yet contradicting; he doesn’t know if he should stay home or go out.
Good Job, Jill! I really love your use of cacophony to represent something you don't like, which is complimented by what you do like through euphony. The personification definitely provoked interest and there was also a relevant use of onomatopoeia to create the sound effects keeping me more interested!
